Grain Sack Upholstery

I still remember the first time I saw a chair that had been reupholstered using vintage grain sacks.  It took my breath away.  It embodied everything I love about casual living and repurposing vintage goods.  And the stripes were blue!  You know I love blue!!

Last summer I was at a flea market and ran across this bench.

You may be surprised to know that it was not the stained, country rose upholstery that attracted me!
It was those legs, and the wide bench pleading for stripes!

So I started by painting the base in ASCP Old White.

I distressed and added a coat of clear wax and dark wax.

At the same flea market where I found the bench, I also found a stash of grain sacks.  Yes, the heavens opened, light shown through the clouds, and the angels sang "Eureka!"

It only took a few inches more than half of a sack to cover this so I've still got a large piece that can be used on a smaller bench or chair seat.
Yep, it still takes my breath away!

Great job, Cyndi! Something like this would be hard for me to part with. I could just see this being used in someone's entry or as bench seating in their country kitchen.

UV or ultraviolet light is damaging to antique furniture. Sunlight can degrade early finishes, wood and fabrics. Antique furniture should be placed out of direct sunlight, and curtains or shades should be used to diffuse or block sunlight when possible. Clear finishes can yellow or turn opaque from the exposure to sunlight.

Okay, wow. I've been spendind the last few hours scrolling through your blog, and I can feel the inspiration literally flowing in me right now! Your blog is all about exactly the kind of things I want to make myself.
However, I've discovered all of this rather recently, and therefore I haven't got any applies yet. Could you maybe make a blog entry about what basic stuff would be useful to invest in, or would you happen to know any other blogger who's already done this?
I can't wait to get started, and I will definitely continue reading your blog!

Greetings from Finland,
Anna

The upholstery information is really true and I agree with them totally. The best thing is it is beneficial for all the people and because of this reason I suggest to read this information.

This one is stunning, too! I have made pillows with my grain sacks and have been wondering what to upholster, and I now remember that old piece I have stored away. It will be made over...you've inspired me.
